Oxford is amazing. Oxford is challenging. Oxford will change your life and your perspective on the world. The people you meet, the things you do are beyond what you could have ever imagined in your wildest dreams. You may think that you want to go somewhere with fancy buildings and high tech equipment but it’s nothing compared to actually being there, experiencing it all for yourself. I am writing this after returning from a 4 day trip back to Oxford where we celebrated our last year at University College, Oxford's only college for American students. We were ten girls who met up for the first time on the platform of Paddington Station in London two years prior. Today we returned as ten young women who had spent the past three years exploring ancient ruins, climbing Nuffield Tower(University College's own tower), swimming in the River Thames and eating nightly suppers together. Tomorrow we return to our homes across the United States to finish out the remainder of our undergraduate studies, though we know we will forever be united by these special four years we spent together, sharing laughs and tears, adventures and long nights studying. Whoever said going away to college was the best four years of their lives was right——they are just that and then some!
My time at Oxford was a whirlwind of new experiences, new friends and a new way of learning. One moment I found myself deep in thought as I read about Plato’s Theory of Forms in my room, the next I was covered in paint and glue as I helped make a puppet opera with my friends. There were times when I felt completely overwhelmed by the amount of reading and writing I had to do, or by the difficulty of certain courses. But I pushed through those moments because ultimately they were worth it----the end result being an increased ability to think critically, write clearly and solve problems. And while I learned to manage my time more effectively and to prioritize better, so much still eludes me. How do you put into words someone else’s theory of colour perception? Or explain why global warming is happening? Or teach yourself how to love something new? These are the lessons I will take with me always and will challenge me for the rest of
