The Faculty of Philosophy was founded in 1892. The first Professor to hold office there was Francis Bacon (1667-1743). Over the years, some other notables have held that chair:
T. H. Green(1836-1882), British philosopher and co-founder with G. E. Moore of Oxford’s famous “Morality” lecture series; Bernard Williams, who later taught at Cambridge, but then went on to be Wytham Professor of Morals at Oxford and tutor for A. J. Ayer; Peter Strawson, now Lord Strawson of Wells; Anthony Quinton; Mary Midgley; and John Searle, currently Chancellors Professor of Contemporary Chinese Thought at UC Berkeley.
In addition to these philosophers, an impressive number of distinguished theologians and historians of philosophy have been associated with the faculty. In more recent times it has become widely known as a center for the study of mind and cognitive science, especially in relation to language and reasoning by means of computer technology.
The current Head of Faculty is Professor Adrian Moore——a distinguished historian of ancient Greek philosophy whose work focuses primarily on Plato, along with Nietzsche and Heidegger. His writings include works on the pre-Socratic philosophers, the nature of love, and the philosophical implications of Darwinism.
